Phuket, the largest island in Thailand, is one of the most popular beach destinations in Southeast Asia and for a good reason. Phuket is blessed by crystal-clear waters and a lovely coastline. It is situated off the west coast of the country’s mainland and connected to Phang Nga province to the north by the Sarasin Bridge.
The Best Things to Do in Phuket for Couples
Spend a Day on the Beach
As one of the most popular travel destinations in Thailand, Phuket has its share of spectacular beaches. Patong Beach on the Southwest coast is undoubtedly the most popular and most visited beach destination here. The area is also the centre of Phuket’s nightlife.
A bit further south, Karon and Kata are two popular white sandy beaches. They tend to be somewhat less crowded than Patong but still lively, with many options for watersports, restaurants and shopping.
Surin Beach, also on the west coast, offers 1 km of soft white sand and is the perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. The nearby Kamala beach, while naturally stunning, remains somewhat undeveloped and is the perfect spot for sunseekers who wish to stay away from the crowds.
Watch the Sunset
Phromthep Cape is a picturesque viewpoint at the southern end of the island, just west of Rawai. A flight of steps takes you up to the top for spectacular views over the bay. Aim to arrive here around 4 pm for some privacy as it does get quite busy just before sunset.
You could also take a sunset cruise to Coral Island where you can find one of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches, Koh Hey, also known as Banana Beach. Half day/full day catamaran tours, which often include sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and other water-based activities, depart every day from Chalong Bay Pier. For an ultimate luxury experience, hire a private catamaran with your own personal chef and crew at your service.
Island Hopping with a Private Speedboat
Hire a private speedboat and spend a day discovering the beauty of the Andaman Sea.
Pristine beaches and vivid turquoise sea await on Phi Phi Islands, the world-famous archipelago, which takes about one hour to reach by speed boat from Phuket. Sunbathe on the white sand beaches or spend a day swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. However, it’s best to get there early, especially if you’re planning to visit the iconic Maya Bay, made famous by the Leonardo De Caprio movie, The Beach.
You can combine your day trip with a tour around Phang Nga Bay. Blessed with outstanding natural beauty, Phang Nga is famous for its limestone cliffs rising out of the sea, sea caves and mangrove forests. One of the highlights is Khao Ping Kan, also known as James Bond Island, for its role in the movie “The Man with The Golden Gun”.
See the Big Buddha
The Phuket Big Buddha is an iconic 45-meter-tall statue, standing on top of the Nakkerd Hills along Chalong Bay. It can be visited between 6 am and 7:30 pm daily and is very easy to get to by road. If you’re an early riser, try visiting first thing in the morning to see the sun rise over the bay. Sunset views from here are just as magnificent, although it tends to get more crowded during that time.
Another traditional and historical landmark in the Chalong Bay area is Wat Chalong. Locals still come here to pray. The temple is believed to be home to numerous miracles.
Visit Phuket Old Town
Visit Phuket Old Town to get a glimpse of the island’s history. A walk through the Old Town’s narrow streets is a great way to meet local culture and tradition. Get close to real local life at the downtown fresh market and try some local pancakes or a spicy somtam at one of the many charming restaurants.
If you like architecture, you will enjoy seeing the Sino-Portuguese townhouses with their colorful façades. For artisanal ice cream and batik fabrics, head over to the main street, Thalang Road. The lively evening Sunday market is a great opportunity to shop for local art and souvenirs.
Try a couple’s spa and massage
Relax and indulge in some pampering with a variety of spa and massage treatments available in Phuket. Spa Burasari offers various packages such as their signature head and shoulder massage or the ‘Burasari Experience’ – a half-day detoxification and pampering spa experience – both of which are available for individuals and couples.
Leave all your stress behind by entering the Turquoise Cove at Oasis Spa and let the experienced massage therapists take you on a delightful journey to serenity. A variety of body wraps, body scrubs, facial treatments and hydrotherapy are available, among others.
Learn to make cocktails
Chalong Bay is an interesting combination of a port, shopping mall and residential area. Visit the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery which is known for producing high-end quality white rum. Sip a refreshing mojito as you get a behind-the scenes guided tour on how their world-famous rum is made. The distillery also hosts a 2-hour cocktail workshop where you can learn how to mix, stir and shake delicious cocktails.
